Take a Picture with the Aruba Letters

In many places, you can find Instagrammable colorful letters of the town or country’s name. In Aruba, you can find a few Instagrammable letter locations.

There are two letter signs on L.G. Smith Boulevard in Oranjestad. The “I Love Aruba” sign is outside the cruise port terminal, close to the Paardenbaai Plaza. The colorful “Aruba, One happy island” sign is at the Plaza Turismo. Both of these areas are about two kilometers away from each other. If you are visiting by cruise ship, walking between both letter signs is about a 30-minute one-way walk.

On J.E Irausquin Boulevard in Noord, in the area of the Casino Aruba, you will find another ‘I Love Aruba” sign. The sign is near Gusto. There is another set of colorful “Aruba” letters in front of one of the local businesses in this area as well. I took a quick picture of the colorful letters when driving by, but unfortunately, I did not notice the business’s name.

Visit The National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum is one of the best free things to do in Aruba. The museum was once the home of Ecury family. The original and oldest part of the home was built in 1870. Extensions to the home were built in the early 1900s. The home eventually became the National Archaeological Museum, which houses many valuable artifacts. At the museum, you will learn about the cultural heritage of Aruba and see artifacts that date back to 2500 BC. If you are interested in the history of Aruba, you should not miss visiting the National Archaeological Museum.

The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Visit Fort Zoutmam

Fort Zoutman is a historical museum where you can get a glimpse into Aruba’s colonial past and learn about the fort’s strategic importance in the Caribbean. Fort Zoutman was built in 1793 to protect the island from pirates and other potential invaders. The fort played a significant role in the island’s early defense system. It was named after Dutch Rear Admiral Johan Zoutman, who won a naval battle against the English in the North Sea.

Fort Zoutman is the oldest structure in Aruba and is located in Oranjestad. It is open daily except on Sundays.

Visit Studio Murano Art

At Studio Murano Art, you can attend a glass-blowing exhibition and purchase handmade glass art in the Studio Murano Art gift shop. During our visit to Studio Murano, we attended the glass-blowing exhibition. It was similar to one we attended in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. This exhibition was more detailed, and the artist explained each step. The artist gave a demonstration of the art of glass blowing, which was very impressive. The artist melted glass pieces and created a glass turtle sculpture in a matter of minutes.

The demonstration was impressive, especially considering the temperature the artist needs to work with. The glass is heated to about 2000 degrees. Even at this temperature, the artist needs to work rapidly. If the glass cools down enough, it becomes difficult to work with the molten glass, and there is a chance that the glass will crack.

The artistry is beautiful, and you can take a piece of glass art home with you, as many pieces are available for sale in their gift shop. You can also buy something to drink or to eat while visiting Studio Murano Art.

Glass blowing demonstrations are available daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. You can also schedule a workshop to learn the art of glass blowing.

Visit San Nicolas

San Nicolas is an artistry town located about 20 kilometers southeast of Oranjestad. The town is known for the many murals painted throughout Main Street. Local and international artists painted the murals as part of the Aruba Art Fair.

San Nicolas is a 30-minute drive from Oranjestad and is very close to popular beaches in the area, such as Baby Beach and Rodger’s Beach.

Try Blokarting in Aruba

Blokarting, also known as land sailing, is one of the unique things to do in Aruba. Instead of sailing in the ocean, you sail a three-wheeled vehicle across land using the power of the tradewinds. Aruba is a great place to try blokarting, as the terrain and wind work perfectly together to give you an exhilarating ride.

The only outfit that offers this unique excursion is Aruba Active Vacations. Your guide will train you and tell you everything you need to know about blokarting and steering the land sailing vehicle. Afterward, you will enjoy land sailing or blokarting. You will control the speed of your vehicle by moving the sail. Your blokarting excursion will last about 2 hours. The meeting place is at Fisherman’s Hut Beach in Noord Aruba.

Visit The Butterfly Farm

If you love butterflies or are traveling with children that love butterflies, then a visit to the Butterfly Farms is in order. The Butterfly Farm is one of the best things to do in Aruba with kids. The farm has a large variety of butterflies in a greenhouse-like environment where you can walk through and observe butterflies. The farm emphasizes conservation and education. They have guided tours that explain the lifecycle of butterflies. If you arrive early, you might be able to see butterflies transition from chrysalis and take their first flight. It truly is a wonder to see.

The Butterfly Farm is located near Palm Beach and the St. Regis Hotel. Once you buy your ticket, you can return to visit the farm throughout your stay in Aruba.

Go Hiking at Mt. Hooiberg

Mt. Hooiberg is a cone-shaped mountain that rises about 540 feet. It is located near the center of the island. It is Aruba’s second highest peak and a popular hike. Hooiberg is Dutch for haystack. Thus, you will sometimes hear the trail referred to as the Haystack Trail, but more often, it will be referred to as the Hooiberg Hiking Trail.

The Hooiberg Hiking Trail is a half-mile in-and-out trail. The hike is considered a moderate hike, and it involves climbing about 600 steps to reach the summit of Mt. Hooiberg. At the summit, you will have beautiful panoramic views of Aruba. On a clear day, you can also see Venezuela from the summit.

Visit the Bubali Bird Sanctuary

The bird sanctuary is a protected area that contains over 80 bird species. This is a great place to birdwatch as you will see many species of birds during your visit. In the northern section of the bird sanctuary, you will find an observation area where you can get a better view of the area. The sanctuary has two man-made bird ponds that are home to many turtles and ducks.

The ducks and turtles are used to having human visitors. What struck me during our visit to the bird sanctuary was that the turtles would swim toward the people standing near the water’s edge. The turtles were small and looked adorable as they swam towards the shore with their heads poking out of the water. The turtles were in groups, and you could see a group of little turtle heads just above the water swimming towards the people. I bet they were hoping for a nice treat.

The Bubali Bird Sanctuary is located close to Palm Beach Resorts, such as the Riu and St. Regis. It is also very close to the Butterfly Farm. The entrance to the Bubali Bird Sanctuary is across the street from the old Dutch Windmill on J.E. Irausquin Boulevard.

Visit Arikok National Park

Arikok National Park is located in the north-eastern part of Aruba. It is a protected nature preserve that is 34 square kilometers large. Arikok National Park takes up about 20% of the island of Aruba. The National Park is diverse and has many places to explore. Due to the size of the park, it has a coastline and a desert, and there are many places to explore.

When you first enter Arikok National Park, you will arrive at the Visitor’s Center. Here, you will pay for your park entrance, which is $20.00 (USD) per person. The entrance fee includes visiting all the sites in the park. You will also receive a map highlighting the roads and points of interest. The roads on the map are color-coded to let you know which roads are paved, non-paved, and rocky. This is the perfect time to ask a park ranger any questions that you may have about the park.

There are several trails available for hiking. However, because of the park’s desert terrain and the Aruban heat, if you plan on going on a hike, you should start your hike early in the morning. During our visit, the intense heat prevented us from hiking as we didn’t think it would be safe to hike. If you decide to go hiking, bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat, as there is little to no shade.

Aside from the hiking trails, several points of interest at Arikok National Park are worth visiting, such as the Fontein Caves and the Natural Pool.

Visit The Natural Pool / Conchi

The beach areas or inlets that are within Arikok National Park have strong surf and undertows and are not safe for swimming. One area known as the Natural Pool or Conchi in Papiamento is safe for swimming as long as the weather and the surf are calm.

Driving to Conchi The Natural Pool

The Natural Pool in Arikok National Park can be challenging to get to. The easiest way to visit the Natural Pool is through a tour. The road starts as a paved road. However, it transitions from a non-paved dirt road to a very rocky road that is challenging to navigate. It is a rugged road that is best driven with a 4 x 4 vehicle. Driving to the Natural Pool is not recommended if you have rented a regular sedan. Chances are, you will be violating your rental car agreement if you decide to drive this road. If this is the case, signing up for a tour to visit the Natural Pool is ideal.

Hiking to Conchi The Natural Pool

Once you arrive at the Natural Pool, you will need to hike to the pool. To reach the pool, you will need to go down several steps, at least 50 or so, to the Natural Pool. As you near the Natural Pool, you will have to go across a short rocky terrain to reach the water. You should wear sturdy water shoes or other shoes you don’t mind getting wet. The rocks to and in the pool can be slippery. Wearing water shoes will help you as you enter and exit the pool.

As you reach the pool, you will see a turquoise pool of water that is surrounded and protected by lava rock formations. The surrounding lava rock formations make the water safe for swimming and snorkeling. The water is clear, and you will see a variety of colorful fish and a few crabs in the water. The Natural Pool at Arikok National Park is worth visiting.

Visit Boka Prins

Boka Prins is one of the inlets located within Arikok National Park. If you visit the caves, you will pass by Boka Prins. Like many of the inlets on Aruba, Boka Prins is beautiful to look at. It is worth stopping to enjoy the beautiful landscape. Parking for Boka Prins is right off the road. Once you park, you follow the path to Boka Prins. You can enjoy the view from the top, or if you’d like to get a closer look, you can take the steps down to Boka Prins. Swimming is not allowed at Boka Prins due to the force of the waves and the strong undertow. The beautiful turquoise water will look very inviting. However, swimming at Boka Prins is dangerous. You should not go in the water.

Visit Fontein Cave

A great cave to explore at Arikok National Park is the Fontein Cave. The Fontein Cave is unique as it has prehistoric drawings on the cave’s ceilings made by the Arawak. The cave is darker, but enough light enters the cave, allowing you to explore without a problem. Pathways have been created inside the cave to guide you as you explore the cave.

There is parking in front of the cave. Outside the cave are stone tables and benches that blend in with the environment where you can sit and enjoy the area.

Visit The Guadirikiri / Quadirikiri Cave

The Quadirikiri Cave is located in Arikok National Park and is a popular cave to visit and explore in Aruba. To reach the cave entrance, you will go up several steps. The steps are a bit high; however, there is a handrail to hold on to for assistance. The entrance to the cave is low, you will need to watch your head as you enter the cave. The cave has three domes that are connected by tunnels to explore. The caves are made of limestone, lava, coral, and quartz and host a few small species of animals, such as insects, bats, and lizards.

The Quadirikiri Cave is perfect for photography as there are sections of the cave illuminated by the sunlight coming through holes in the ceiling of the cave. This creates a perfect scene for a few incredible pictures. The deeper and darker sections of the cave are home to bats. The Quadirikiri Cave is interesting to explore. You should absolutely add the cave to your itinerary.

Visit the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins

Visiting the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins is one of the free things to do in Aruba. During the early 1800s, there was a gold rush in Aruba. Smelters were constructed to extract the gold. The Bushiribana Gold Mill is one of two smelters that have survived, and you can visit the ruins of both smelters.

The Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins are a popular stop for many tours, especially when cruise ships are in town. Don’t be surprised to see a lot of people at this location. While at the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins, you can also visit the recently discovered Hidden Cave Pool, which is within walking distance from the Bushiribana Gold Mill.

Visit the Hidden Cave Pool in Aruba

Within walking distance of the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins is the Hidden Cave Pool. The Hidden Cave Pool was discovered about five years ago. You will find the Cave Pool by walking about 200 yards to the right away from the ruins. You will come to a ladder that is attached to the rocks. To reach the pool, you will need to climb down the ladder that is attached to the rocks. The ladder goes straight down, so you must be careful and wear proper shoes to make your way down safely. When you reach the rocks at the bottom you will see a smaller pool first. The larger pool is a little past the small pool.

The Cave Pool is a natural pool with crystal-clear water. There is a bit of current, which can intensify based on water conditions outside of the protective rocks. You can jump into the pool from one of the cliffs into the deeper water. The cliff isn’t very high. While the Hidden Cave Pool is close to the Gold Mill ruins, it was off the beaten path as not many people knew about the pool. Many people are also weary about climbing down the ladder. Nowadays, you might find that the pool is a bit more crowded as some tours stop at this newly discovered pool to let tourists enjoy its crystal clear waters.

If you visit the Hidden Cave Pool, you should stay within the protected area as the surf and currents outside this area are strong.

Visit The Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization that cares for many of Aruba’s donkeys. There are approximately 160 donkeys in Aruba. The sanctuary houses and cares for about 126  donkeys. Entrance to the Donkey Sanctuary and feeding the donkeys is free. They do accept donations if you would like to donate to the sanctuary. There is a Visitor’s Center where you can ask questions about the donkeys. You can also buy a drink, a snack, or a souvenir.

Feeding the donkeys is a family-friendly thing to do in Aruba. There are rules for feeding the donkeys, which help make things easier. You should feed the donkeys from the porch of the Visitor’s Center. There is a railing between the porch and the feeding area that will keep the donkeys from swarming around you once you start feeding them. You can bring carrots or apples and chop them up in the Visitor Center before feeding them to the donkeys. If you did not bring your food, feed is available for purchase for $1.00 for a small bucket and $3.00 for a large bucket.

The Donkey Sanctuary is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and on weekends from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Visit the Balashi Gold Mill Ruins

The Balashi Gold Mill Ruins is located in Balashi at the southern end of Frenchman’s Pass. The Balashi Gold Mill was instrumental in producing about 3 million pounds of gold. The mill is located near the sea and was connected by three railways, which made transporting the mined gold easier.

Today, you can visit the ruins to get a glimpse of Aruba’s gold mining past. There is no fee to visit the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mill. There is ample parking near the site. Stopping at the ruins is popular for many tours as it is on the way to the Natural Bridge.

Visit the Natural Bridge

The Natural Bridge is located on the north side of the island. The original Natural Bridge collapsed in 2005. However, there was another smaller natural bridge in the area known as Baby Bridge. Nowadays, if you visit the Natural Bridge, it is Baby Bridge that you will see.

The ocean is very forceful in the Northern part of the island, and you will enjoy a spectacular view of the ocean crashing against the coastline. This adds to the beauty of the coastline. The Natural Bridge is made of volcanic limestone rock and has been formed by the ocean over many years. Because of its natural state and the force of the ocean, there is a chance for the bridge to collapse one day, just like the original bridge. For now, though, the site is beautiful and worth a visit.

You will also get a glimpse of Andicuri Beach from the Natural Bridge area. While the beach is absolutely beautiful, you should be careful as the waves are strong in this area, and swimming is not advised.

Visit the Chapel of Our Lady of Alto Vista

The original Chapel of Alto Vista was built in 1750. It was located in the same area. A hilltop that overlooks the Caribbean Sea on the northern part of the island of Aruba. The original Alto Vista Chapel was known as the place where Aruban Indians were converted to Christianity.

The church that currently stands in the same location as the original chapel was built in 1952. It is brightly painted and very pretty. The view from the church grounds that overlook the Sea is spectacular. There is also a labyrinth known as the Peace Labyrinth that can be used for peaceful contemplation.

Visit the California Lighthouse

The California Lighthouse is a 100-year-old lighthouse located on the west point of the island of Aruba. From this area, you get a wonderful view of the north and south sides of the island, including a great view of Arashi Beach. The California Lighthouse is a popular tourist destination and can get crowded, making it a bit difficult to capture the perfect photo. If you want to avoid the crowds, your best bet is to visit the lighthouse early in the day.

The California Lighthouse is open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. There is a $5.00 admission fee if you would like to enter and climb to the top of the lighthouse. You can also enjoy the lighthouse and view from the hillside at no charge.

If you visit the California Lighthouse in the afternoon or early evening, consider having dinner at Faro Blanco Restaurant, which is adjacent to the lighthouse.

Visit the Casibari Rock Formation

The Casibari Rock formations are located towards the center of the island north of Mt. Hooiberg near Paradera. The rock formations are composed of Quartz Diorite and were formed millions of years ago. Evidence of prehistoric drawings is still visible on the rock formations.

There are a couple of rock formations in this area. The main rock formation, which is also the largest, is about 140 feet tall. It is also the most popular formation to climb. The climb to the top of the rock formation is not very difficult. There are two ways to climb the rock formation. There are natural rock steps toward the front of the rock formation and man-made rock steps at the back of the rock formation with handrails to assist climbers.

If you take the front route, you must watch your head as there is a section that is low. You will bump your head on the rock if you are not careful. The view from the top of the mountain is incredible. You have a wonderful view of the local area and a perfect view of Mt. Hooiberg.

The second rock formation is close to the large one across the road. The larger rock formation is more popular, a bit more crowded, and taller than the second rock formation.

You should wear proper shoes when climbing the Casibari Rock Formation as the steps are rocky, and even the man-made steps are a bit rocky and uneven.

There is a coffee shop where you can buy something to drink or eat. There are also restrooms available at the site.

Visit the Ayo Rock Formation

The Ayo Rock Formations are located in Ayo. The rock formation consists of large builders that are grouped together. You will find Arawak Petroglyphs throughout the area. There are paths that you can follow around and through the rocks. However, there is no path to the top of the rocks. The Ayo Rock Formations are less crowded than the Casibari Rock Formations but are worth seeing due to the historical petroglyphs on the rocks. There are no restroom facilities at this site.

Visit the Royal Aruba Aloe Factory Museum and Store

Royal Aruba Aloe has several stores around the island where you can purchase their products. At the factory, not only can you purchase their products, but you can go on a free tour and learn about aloe production and the products sold by Royal Aruba Aloe. Go on a Sunset Cruise in Aruba

Aruba is a beautiful island. The sunsets in Aruba are just as incredible. Taking a sunset cruise during your visit to Aruba is a great way to spend an evening. You will sail along the beautiful coast of Aruba while watching the sunset over the ocean. There are several sunset cruise operators in Aruba, so you can choose the trip that is perfect for you. You can sail on a romantic sunset cruise, enjoy the evening on a lively party sunset cruise, or watch the sunset from Aruba’s popular Pirate Ship. Whichever one you choose, you will have an incredible time.

Visit Flamingo Beach at Renaissance Island

Renaissance Island is a private island on the Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort property. This private island is popular because of the flamingos at Flamingo Beach. You can spend a relaxing day at the resort while enjoying watching the beautiful flamingos. If you decide to stay at the resort, you will have access to Flamingo Beach as a resort guest. If you are not a guest of the resort, you can purchase a day pass to visit Flamingo Beach. The resort is part of the Marriott family. You can purchase a pass on the resort’s day pass website or contact the resort by telephone.

Visit Aruba’s Beautiful Beaches

Aruba’s stunning beaches draw many tourists to the island. Aruba has many incredible, beautiful, white sandy beaches. We were lucky enough to be able to explore several beaches. A few are near tourist areas, are very popular, and are more congested. Other beaches in Aruba are off-the-beaten path, less known to tourists, and less crowded.

Eagle Beach

One of the most well-known and popular beaches is Eagle Beach. Eagle Beach is a long beach and is close to many hotels. It is also where the most well-known and most photographed Fofoti Tree is located. The tree is also known as the Divi Tree. Because of the Instagrammable Divi Tree, this beach can get crowded, even more so if there is a cruise ship in port. Despite the crowds, Eagle Beach is a beautiful beach and is worth visiting.

Eagle Beach is a great location. You will find several places to grab a bite to eat in this area. There are a couple of bars on the beach that offer drinks and small bites. Beach rentals and restroom facilities are available.

Eagle Beach is located in Oranjestad in the low-rise hotel resort area.

Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is a beautiful large beach near Oranjestad, a few minutes from Queen Beatrix International Airport. This beach is great for families as the water is calm and shallow. The beach was not crowded at all. This is probably due to its location near the airport. There are restroom facilities located at the beach. We found a bar in the area that was part of a resort near the beach.

Our visit to Surfside Beach was not planned. We were at a different location with a great view of the beach and noticed airplanes coming in to land at the airport. Of course, we were drawn to this beach and decided to visit.

This unique beach in Aruba merits a mention because of its proximity to the airport. It is a great place to see airplanes land at the airport. While not exactly identical, it reminded us of Maho Beach in Sint Maarten and Black Rock Beach in Rarotonga. Other people eventually arrived at the beach in time to see larger airplanes arriving into Aruba. We took great photos and had a great time during our visit to Surfside Beach.

Baby Beach

Baby Beach is one of the best beaches in Aruba for Kids. It is a half-moon soft sand beach with calm waters. The beach is within a lagoon, which keeps the water calm. The water is also shallow in a large part of the lagoon, making this a great place for kids to swim and play in the water. If you go further out in the lagoon, towards the deeper water where the bay opens out to the ocean, you will find great snorkeling. For your safety, you will need to be careful to stay within the lagoon.

There are a couple of places where you can purchase food during your visit to Baby Beach. If you didn’t bring any snorkel equipment, you can rent equipment at the beach. There are also beach beds available to rent. If you prefer not to rent, there are palapas available for free. Restroom facilities are available.

Baby Beach is located in the Southern part of Aruba near San Nicolas.
