The best time to visit San Luis Obispo really depends on what you would like to do on your weekend getaway.  The warm season starts in mid-June and goes through mid-October. During this time, the high is closer to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a great time to include the coastal towns in your visit as the ocean is warmer, and there are many water activities and tours available to do. This is also a great time to see the vineyards in the surrounding region, as they are full of leaves and grapes, making for spectacular views of the vineyards. The harvest season starts in late August and goes through October. This is also a great time to experience events during harvest season.

The cooler season begins around November and goes through March. The coldest month of the year is usually in December. A warm jacket might be in order during this time of the year, especially during December. The cooler season is also a great time to visit as this coincides with the holiday season. There are several events that take place in downtown SLO, such as the daily Musical Light Show and light displays in the Holiday Plaza.

SLO starts warming up in April and gets warmer as we begin the summer month of June. This is a beautiful time in the area as the flowers begin to bloom in the springtime, and the buds begin to break on the vines in wine country.

Every season in SLO has its beauty and charm. With many different activities available throughout the year, you will find that any time is the best time to take a weekend getaway to San Luis Obispo

How Many Days Should You Stay in San Luis Obispo

There are many things to see in San Luis Obispo and in the surrounding area. It would be very difficult to see everything in two days. You would be rushing through the area, trying to get in as many stops as possible, visiting as many places as possible, and exploring the surrounding area. The minimum amount of days you should stay in San Luis Obispo is three days. You might still not be able to see everything you’d like to, but you could plan a great three-day itinerary for San Luis Obispo.

The Best Way to Get to San Luis Obispo

The best way to get to San Luis Obispo is by driving. If you would like to take a bus, you can easily do that from Los Angeles. There is a round trip, non-stop route on the Greyhound Bus to San Luis Obispo. You can take the bus from Los Angeles Union Station or near UCLA. The bus stop in SLO shares the same station as the train and is located at 1011 Railroad Ave in SLO.

One other mode of transportation worth mentioning is taking the Amtrack train to San Luis Obispo. The Coast Starlight has a daily route between Seattle and Los Angeles. The Pacific Surfliner has a daily route between San Diego and San Luis Obispo. Both the Coast Starlight and the Pacific Surfliner have a daily stop in San Luis Obispo, making the trip by train fairly easy. Since both routes travel along the coast for part of the time, this is a great way to enjoy the view of the coast. Taking the train is a great way to start off your weekend getaway to San Luis Obispo and you might also get some amazing photographs of the beautiful California Coast.

Visit Slo a’ la Mode – One of San Luis Obispo’s Best Ice Cream Shops

Slo a’ La Mode is hands down one of the best ice cream shops in San Luis Obispo. If you are craving ice cream, I recommend stopping by and getting a cone. There are many flavors to choose from, including several Vegan flavors.

Making a decision on what flavor to try can be challenging as there are many flavors, and everything looks delicious. When I was there, I tried the Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, which is a cheesecake ice cream with a raspberry ripple, oreo cookie crumble, and chocolate chunks. It was creamy, perfectly balanced, not overly sweet or cloying, and simply amazing. Reya is partial to coffee and fall seasonal flavors, so she decided on a double scoop. She tried the Exhausted Parent, which is a bourbon-spiked espresso ice cream swirled with bittersweet chocolate chunks. If she could have taken a tub home, she would have. Her second flavor was Pumpkin, which is a spiced pumpkin ice cream flavored with pumpkin puree. Which she loved and described as an elevated spiced pumpkin latte.

You will find Slo a’ La Mode downtown at 860 Higuera Street. They are open daily from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm.

The walls on the back side of the Fremont Theatre and the Laird Building have murals painted on them that are part of the Art in Public Places program sponsored by the City of San Luis Obispo and the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. The murals are colorful and hard to miss. The paintings represent the seven sisters, which are central coast peaks that extend over 40 miles from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay. The peak in Morro Bay is one of the most well-known peaks known as Morro Rock.

You can find the murals on the 1000 block of Higuera Street between Santa Rosa Street and Osos Street.

Visit Bubblegum Alley

Bubble Gun Alley in San Luis Obispo is one of the oddest attractions located in downtown SLO. It is very popular and highly photographed. Bubblegum Alley is considered art to some people and a type of graffiti to others. Some might even call it an Instagramable location. Bubblebum Alley is fairly long, stretching between both streets that run perpendicular to it. You are free to add your own bubblegum to the alley wall.  I thought it was interesting and didn’t spend too much time there as it kind of turned my stomach. You will probably need sanitizer if you decide to stick your gum to the wall. Let me know what you think of the alley! Bubblegum Alley is located at 733 Higuera Street, between Broad Street and Garden Street.
